unterwegs in Devon - on my way in Devon - en route en Devon

Hallo!

Hello!

It’s time for the delayed post. From tomorrow on I will be away for 10 days, therefore I’ve altered the plan of posting. The next post will be online the weekend after Easter. The weekend before last weekend I went to the ruins of the castle Berry Pomeroy. It wasn’t easy to find the station for the bus that only arrives 5 times a day. When I arrived at the station 1 -2 km away from the castle I first had to walk a good 200 metres on the road because there was not foot path. One guy on my school just said “Welcome to England!”. They had a really good audio guide in the actual ruins so I felt like travelling back in time. Therefore I’ve spent quite a lot of time exploring the ruins themselves and the history of them. The original castle was built about 1400 by the Pomeroy family. Later, it was bought by Edward Seymour and altered massively. He was the brother of Jane Seymour, the wife of Henry VIII (King of England 1509-1947) who gave birth to his son and heir Edward VI, who then became the next English King. The view from the little mountain into the valley was worth seeing as well, although the weather was not as good as on the following day. On Sunday I stayed home and enjoyed the sun in the garden. Last weekend – the beginning of spring break – we had horrible weather so I stayed home and spent my time working on revision for school. More precisely, I did this on Saturday, Sunday and Monday. It genuinely took a lot of time (and I even got an essay left to write). However as I am determined to prepare myself thoroughly for the exams (and because I couldn’t leave the house anyway) it didn’t feel like a waste of time.

On Tuesday I met a friend and we went eating an ice cream and strolling over the Downs of Babbacombe. Wednesday I walked to Compton Castle, but visiting it didn’t take an awful lot of time, so I decided to go to Occombe Farm as well. Apart from the tart in the café I just saw some of the animals. Then I continued walking – this time to Cockington Country Park, where I saw someone manufacturing a vase (from glass). Eventually, I walked home and I was completely and utterly exhausted after having walked about 12 miles (about 19kms). At the same time, it felt good being so tired out, knowing that I’ve actually pushed myself to do this massive walk. In addition there something peaceful about walking in silence on my own for such a long time. Today I was mainly packing my bag for the holiday with friends in Ireland which will begin tomorrow. Now I wish you all wonderful holidays and happy Easter!

Salut!
